The expansion control valve: what it does and why it drips

It is the valve that is supposed to let water out. Understanding that one fact sorts out most arguments about a hot water system that leaves a wet patch on the ground.

An expansion control valve is a small brass valve on the cold water line feeding a mains-pressure storage hot water system, and its only job is to let out the extra volume of water the cylinder creates every time it heats. It is not a fault when it releases water. It is a fault when it stops.

Why a hot water system needs one at all

Water expands when you heat it. A cylinder filled with cold water and brought up to storage temperature holds a few per cent more volume at the end of the cycle than it did at the start, and that extra volume has nowhere to go. It cannot compress, and the tank cannot stretch.

In an older installation it pushed back down the cold line towards the street main and nobody noticed. Modern installations usually cannot, because something on the inlet blocks reverse flow: a non-return valve, a pressure limiting valve with a check function, or a backflow prevention device. Once that happens, the plumbing between the main and the tank is a sealed volume full of water that is getting hotter. That is a closed system, and it needs a deliberate place for the expansion to go.

The expansion control valve is that place. It sits on the cold inlet, it is set to open at a pressure below the rating of the temperature and pressure relief valve on the cylinder, and it releases a small amount of water each heating cycle through a discharge pipe to a safe, visible point outside.

What it is not: the three valves people confuse

Almost every argument about "the valve that leaks" is actually an argument about which valve. They sit close together, they all discharge water, and they mean completely different things.

The practical consequence is worth stating plainly: if the expansion control valve is doing its work, the relief valve on the cylinder should rarely operate. A relief valve that has started discharging on a system that used to be dry is very often reporting a failure of the valve on the inlet, not a failure of the tank. Does every system have one?

No, and knowing which kind you have saves a pointless search.

  • Mains-pressure storage systems — electric, gas storage, heat pump and the storage cylinder of a solar system — are the ones that normally have one, because they hold a fixed volume under street pressure.
  • Low-pressure and gravity-fed systems, the older style with a tank in the roof space, usually do not. They relieve expansion up the open vent pipe instead, which is why they are the systems that spit into a gutter rather than onto a garden bed.
  • Continuous flow units heat water as it passes through and store almost nothing, so there is no meaningful expansion to control.

How does an expansion control valve fail?

It fails in two directions, and the symptoms are opposites.

It fails open, and dribbles constantly

Every time the valve lifts, water flushes past the seat carrying scale and corrosion debris with it. Eventually a fragment lodges where the seat closes and the valve can no longer seal. The tell is the change in pattern: a discharge that used to come and go with the heating cycle is now a trickle that never stops. A fouled valve rarely recovers on its own.

It fails shut, and the relief valve takes over

The quieter failure and the more serious one. The expansion still has to go somewhere, so the relief valve on the cylinder opens instead — a safety device now operating every heating cycle as a matter of routine. The cylinder's last protection is being worn for no reason, and the wet pipe is the one at the top of the tank rather than the one at the inlet.

There is a third case that is not a failure at all: a system that never had a valve fitted, or that gained a check valve later. A meter change can turn an open system into a closed one overnight, the house starts discharging within days, and the timing looks like coincidence when it is not.

The one thing never to do. Never cap, plug, extend into a container, fit a tap to, or otherwise restrict a discharge pipe from any of these valves, no matter how annoying the drip is. That pipe is the escape route for a sealed cylinder full of very hot water under pressure. Blocking it does not fix the drip — it removes the protection and turns a nuisance into a dangerous failure.

What is worth checking before you call

None of this involves touching a valve, and all of it shortens the visit.

  • Work out which pipe is wet — the one from the valve on the cold inlet line, or the one from the top of the cylinder. Photograph both. This single fact narrows the diagnosis more than anything else you can report.
  • Note when it runs. Discharge tied to the heating cycle, and stopping afterwards, is routine. Discharge in the middle of the afternoon on an off-peak system is not.
  • Note the temperature of the discharge without putting a hand in the stream. Steaming or scalding water changes the urgency: that points at the temperature side of the relief valve lifting, which is a call to a licensed plumber now rather than tomorrow.
  • Look for signs of high pressure elsewhere: pipes that bang when you shut a tap, taps that are hard to close, washers failing more often than they should.
  • Note the age of the system, when it was last serviced, and whether anything changed at the meter recently.
Where this stops. Replacing or adjusting an expansion control valve is not a maintenance task. It is set to a value matched to the relief valve and the supply pressure of that installation, fitting the wrong one is worse than fitting none, and it is licensed plumbing work in every Australian state and territory.
