Dux hot water: what the range covers, and why Ecosmart is not a specification
Most people meet this brand at the quote stage, where a single line reads Dux Ecosmart and sounds like a product. It is a family name that spans a heat pump and two different solar systems — three installations with three different sets of site requirements.
Dux is a manufacturer, not a type of hot water system, and its Australian residential range covers six families: electric storage, gas storage, continuous flow, heat pump, electric boosted solar and gas boosted solar. Choosing the brand therefore settles almost nothing. The decision that actually changes your week — stored volume or capped flow rate, gas or electric or heat pump — is still ahead of you, and your house decides it rather than the badge. The residential range is presented as the HOTTIE range, and it is organised by family name rather than by system type — which is the source of most of the confusion:

Read down the right-hand column and the point makes itself: these are not trim levels of one product. They are six different installations, and the one your house can take may not be the one you had in mind. Why is Ecosmart on a quote not specific enough?
Because Ecosmart covers three distinct systems: the heat pump, the electric boosted solar and the gas boosted solar. A quote line reading Dux Ecosmart tells you the manufacturer and the family and leaves the actual job undefined — and the three differ in ways that matter long after the invoice:
- One of them puts nothing on your roof. The heat pump is a ground-level unit; both solar options mean collectors, roof penetrations and structural load.
- One of them makes a noise. A heat pump runs a compressor, on a cycle, in a fixed spot outside your house. Solar collectors are silent.
- One of them needs gas. Gas boosted solar does; the other two do not.
- They fail differently. A heat pump has a refrigeration circuit and a fan; a solar system has collectors, roof pipework and a booster that can quietly do all the work while you assume the sun is.
Ask for the model designation, not the family name. Two quotes can both say Ecosmart and be for completely different installations, which makes them impossible to compare — and comparing quotes is the entire reason you collected three.
Is Dux made in Australia?
Partly, and the company is specific about which part. Dux states that its large electric, gas storage, solar and heat pump water heaters are manufactured at a facility in the Southern Highlands of regional New South Wales, and that the company is a member of the Noritz Group, a Japanese water heater manufacturer.
That combination is normal rather than unusual in this market — several familiar Australian hot water names sit under overseas parent groups while still manufacturing here. It is worth knowing for one practical reason, and it is not a patriotic one: what you actually want from a manufacturer is spare parts in the country and a service network that covers your postcode in ten years' time. Local manufacture is a reasonable signal for that. It is not a guarantee, and it is not a reason to pick a system type your house cannot take.
How do I find out which Dux I already have?
Look for the data plate: a label on the outer jacket of a tank, or on the casing of a wall-mounted continuous flow unit. It carries the model designation, the serial number, and — on gas appliances — the gas type the unit is configured for. Photograph it.
That one photo is worth more than any phone description. It tells a technician what they are coming to, it tells you whether a replacement quote is comparing like with like, and on a gas unit it answers the natural gas or LPG question that otherwise gets assumed and occasionally gets assumed wrong.
What belongs on the quote
- The full model designation, not the family name, and the gas type where it applies.
- Tank volume and recovery rate for storage, heat pump and solar — the two numbers that decide whether you run out.
- Litres per minute at a realistic winter temperature rise if it is continuous flow. Headline flow rates assume a gentle rise; winter mains water is colder.
- Siting and clearances in writing. Gas appliances vent combustion products and have minimum distances from windows, doors and vents; a heat pump needs airflow clearance and somewhere for condensate to drain.
- For solar: the roof orientation assumed, and what the booster is. A solar system with an undersized collector array and a hard-working booster is an expensive electric or gas system with panels on it.
- Tempering valve, relief valve discharge and isolation valve — the three items most often missing from the cheapest quote.
- The installer's licence number and the compliance certificate for the work.
How far can you take this yourself?
All of the above. Photographing the data plate, identifying which family you are actually being quoted, checking the clearances against the spot you have, measuring the space a tank would need, and getting the items above written onto the quote are all yours, and none of them requires a licence.
This far, and no further. Installing, replacing or repairing a hot water system is licensed plumbing work in every Australian state and territory. Anything on the gas side of a gas appliance additionally requires gasfitting authorisation, and the electrical connection is licensed electrical work. Do not relight a pilot, open a burner compartment, or open the electrical enclosure on an electric unit or a heat pump. The licensing rules and the compliance paperwork are set by each state and territory, so check the requirements with the plumbing regulator where you live, and ask for the licence number before the work starts.
